An inexpensive auction find in Beloit moves me from test boards to a real piece of furniture—and its first workbench session rewards patience.

From Test Boards to a Table

I have become fascinated by wood—its grain, its color, and how much patient work can change the way it looks and feels. I began by sanding pieces of 2×8 construction pine and using them to test different staining processes. This table is the next step.

The online auction was nearing its end when I found a compact wooden drop-leaf table with two chairs. At $25, it seemed like the right kind of project: useful enough to be worth saving, substantial enough to teach me something, and inexpensive enough that I could learn without being afraid of every decision.

For twenty-five dollars, I did not just buy a table and two chairs. I bought a practical education in wood.

The listing described the set simply as “wooden,” which left an important question unanswered. From the auction photographs alone, it was impossible to know whether the top was solid wood, veneer over a stable wood core, or a manufactured material made to look like wood.

The Pickup Answered the First Question

I picked the set up in Beloit on July 15, 2026, and finally had the chance to inspect it in person. The best discovery came immediately: it is real wood, not pressboard.

That does not identify the species, and it does not yet prove that every visible surface is solid wood rather than a carefully made veneer. Those details still deserve a close look. But ruling out pressboard gives me confidence that this is a genuine wood-restoration project and a worthwhile step beyond my pine test boards.

What I know today: the table is made from real wood rather than pressboard. The exact species and the construction of each surface will remain open questions until I inspect the grain, edges, underside, joinery, and any hidden maker’s marks more carefully.

The Best Part of the Pickup

Janet was kind enough to drive me to Beloit to collect the auction items. I do not know what I would do without her. She turned what could have been a complicated pickup into a day we could share, then helped bring a small convoy of somebody else’s old furniture home so it could begin a new life with us.

The table may be the project, but Janet is the reason the project made it home.

I forgot the one photograph that might have become the classic: the back of our Maverick loaded with tables and chairs, headed home in full Beverly Hillbillies style. The camera missed that scene, but the memory belongs in the journal anyway—our modern little truck doing its best impression of the Clampett family wagon, with Janet at the wheel and my latest ideas stacked behind us.

Why This Set Is a Good Teacher

The table is about 36 inches wide, 52 inches long with the leaves open, and 30 inches high—standard dining-table height. Its compact size should make it manageable to move and work on.

The drop leaves provide several surfaces for comparing cleaning, preparation, stain, and finish. The hinges and leaf supports add a lesson in furniture mechanics, while the two chairs introduce joints and shapes that cannot be learned from a flat construction board.

Before I decide how much sanding or stripping to do, I want the table to tell me what it needs. A real-wood piece deserves restraint. The goal is not to erase its age, but to understand its construction, repair what is failing, and reveal the character that is already there.

The Maverick’s glorious furniture-packed profile escaped the camera, but the cargo was safely home and ready for its first portrait.

A modest table with a flourish. The softly scalloped corner keeps this practical little table from being merely square. Even before restoration, it has a small signature of its own.
Standing on its own four feet. Simple legs, broad boards, and no attempt to pretend it has lived an easy life. For twenty-five dollars, it already carries itself rather well.

The Top Has Stories

Scratches, cloudy patches, worn edges, and strong grain turn the tabletop into a map of the work ahead.

Every scratch has seniority. Pale spots and crossing scratches show where the old finish has surrendered first. This is not damage to hide from the journal; it is the project’s starting line.
The reason I stopped worrying. Bold growth rings, small knots, and unmistakable wood fibers run through the frame. The finish may be uncertain, but the material underneath is not pressboard.
Lot 2164 reports for duty. “Wooden drop leaf table w/2-chairs—36×52×30in.” The plain auction label gives the facts; the photographs begin to supply the personality.
A landscape in old finish. Seen low across the surface, every scuff catches the light. The long grain still reads clearly beneath the wear, waiting for a careful—not reckless—hand.

A Tale of Two Chairs

The pair matches in shape, but not in condition. Together they offer a second restoration project hiding beside the first.

The presentable twin. A curved crest rail, five slender spindles, and upholstery that has survived with its dignity mostly intact. This chair volunteered for the formal portrait.
Stripes still standing at attention. The first cushion shows age and a few small marks, but its orderly brown-and-cream ribs remain surprisingly composed.
The chair that remembers dinner. Its partner wears a darker record of spills, meals, and years. If upholstery could testify, this seat would need a full afternoon.
The story turns underneath. Folded fabric, hand-driven staples, raw framing, and the seat board reveal the practical anatomy hidden below the respectable stripes.
A clue without a confession. Faint black factory numbers remain on the underside. They may someday help date or identify the chair, but for now they are simply one more breadcrumb.
Somebody has been here before. A torn-out hole in the corner brace records an earlier fastening attempt. Restoration begins by noticing what a previous repair asked the wood to endure.
A small hole with a long résumé. The rough fibers and enlarged opening deserve more than a fresh screw. They call for a repair that restores strength instead of merely borrowing it.

The Evidence Underneath

The underside is where the table stopped posing and started explaining itself: boards, cleats, screws, hinges, supports, and exposed end grain.

The honest view from floor level. Four legs, a substantial apron, and a raised support show a table built from recognizable parts—not a sealed box hiding a mystery core.
The leaf earns its name. Three hinges let the side fold away, while a long wooden brace slides underneath to carry the load when dinner needs more room.
The photograph that settled the argument. Unfinished boards, knots, grain, battens, and old screws make their case from below. Whatever questions remain about species or finish, pressboard is no longer one of them.
Compact by design. With the leaf folded, the narrow support slides back beneath the center section. It is simple furniture mechanics—visible, understandable, and repairable.
Support No. 1 shows its end grain. The little felt pad softens contact with the leaf; the exposed end is another quiet witness that the working parts are real wood.
Support No. 2, ready for comparison. Its mate repeats the same practical idea with its own wear pattern—two small wooden arms that have quietly held up countless meals.

A Glimpse of Where This Could Go

A Facebook Marketplace listing stopped me in my tracks. Its table appears visually very close to mine and feels like a preview of what this $25 Beloit find might become: warm, useful, and ready to move gracefully from a narrow everyday footprint to a full dining table.

The resemblance is strongest in the broad rectangular top, the drop-leaf proportions, the prominent grain, and the compact-to-company-ready transformation. Its warm traditional finish is especially helpful as a restoration reference. The turned lower legs and stretchers are more decorative than the parts visible on my table, so I think of this one as a visual cousin and an encouraging destination—not a confirmed twin.

The missing view matters. The listing never shows the underside. That means I cannot compare its boards and cleats, hinges, leaf supports, fasteners, joinery, or maker’s marks with mine. The resemblance is real, but the photographs alone cannot prove that the two tables share a maker or model.
The space-saving promise. With both leaves lowered, the table becomes almost console-like—a handsome demonstration of what drop-leaf design does best when the guest list is short and floor space is precious.
The finish to aim toward. Warm color, an even sheen, visible grain, and crisp edges give the table a cared-for presence without sanding away its personality. The chairs pictured are not included in the listing.
Halfway to company-ready. One leaf down captures the table in transition and shows off the broad grain beautifully. It is the most revealing side view—but still keeps the all-important underside out of sight.

The Base Says, “Not So Fast”

Today I turned the table upside down and began what I expected to be a straightforward separation of the base from the top. Sixteen new photographs record the slower, more interesting truth: a small army of old flathead screws, a successful removal, a base that is also glued in place, and the hardware that lets both drop leaves do their work.

The screws were slotted flatheads, so every turn required a steady hand. A driver can climb out of that narrow slot in an instant, scratch the wood, or chew the screw head into something much harder to remove. I took my time, kept the tool aligned, and eventually brought every screw out successfully without turning the job into a repair of my own making.

Then came the surprise. With the screws gone, the base did not release. It appears to be glued to the tabletop as well as mechanically fastened. That changed the question from “Can I remove it?” to “Is there a good reason to risk removing it?” For now, I am leaning toward putting the screws back into their original holes and refinishing the table with the base intact.

Progress sometimes looks like taking something apart. Today it looked like knowing when not to force the next step.
My safest next move: do not pry against the glued joint. Reinstall the original screws by hand, return each one to its existing hole, and tighten only until snug. Forcing the base free could tear fibers from the soft wood, split an apron or cleat, or turn a sound structural joint into a repair. The drop leaves are a better candidate for deliberate separation because their hinges are visible and mechanically reversible. Before removing them, I will photograph and label every hinge position, support each leaf, and keep each screw with the hole it came from.

First, Turn the Question Upside Down

With the table safely supported and its feet in the air, the underside became the day’s workbench map.

A Small Army of Flatheads

The base was not held by one convenient modern fastener. Old slotted screws marched around the inner rails, each one asking for patience and a driver that stayed centered.

One slip away from a new problem. The shallow slot explains why this was slow work. Steady downward pressure protected both the screw head and the surrounding wood.
Fasteners in formation. One rail alone carries a whole row of screws. This was not a quick four-corner disassembly; the table wanted every inch of its base held close.
Hardware around every corner. Screws continue along the rails while the wooden support brace crosses the frame. The underside is less a single assembly than a neighborhood of connected jobs.
No shortcut around the perimeter. Each screw came out one careful turn at a time. Speed would have saved minutes and risked adding hours.
The last stretch reveals the next lesson. The screw line runs beside the track for a leaf-support brace, while two hinges wait along the edge. Removing one system exposes the logic of another.
Every screw came home. The small pile is today’s quiet victory: all of the fasteners removed, no stripped slots, and no screwdriver scars added to the table.

How the Leaves Hold Their Ground

Close views record the recessed hinges and the sliding wooden supports before either leaf is separated from the center section.

A hinge worth mapping. Six slotted screws hold this leaf hinge in shallow mortises. Its exact position and orientation now have a photographic record for reassembly.
The brace peeks through. This block is the working end of the sliding support. It travels through the apron opening and moves beneath the raised leaf to carry its weight.
Hardware remembers every move. Wear and small chips around this mortise show where leaf, hinge, and table have negotiated with one another over the years.
Six screws, one exact address. A straight-on photograph preserves the hinge layout before any future disassembly. Old hardware is much easier to return when memory has help.
Support on the move. The brace follows a simple horizontal route through the apron. Extended, it holds the leaf up; retracted, it clears the way for the leaf to fold.
Two projects meet at the corner. The hinge can be removed mechanically, but the nearby leg and worn mortise are reminders to support the leaf and work without twisting the joint.

The Moment to Think Twice

After the fasteners surrendered, the base stayed put. Three wider views preserve the table exactly where the plan changed.

No victory lap with a pry bar. A glued joint can hold long after the screws are gone. The absence of movement is information, not an invitation to force it.
Still one table—for now. The base may stay exactly where its maker intended. Reinstalling the screws and working around it preserves a sound joint while leaving the leaf hinges as the sensible next separation point.

Study the grain and edges, identify the wood construction, and check every joint and moving part for looseness.

Use a hidden area to test any cleaner, stripper, sanding method, stain, or finish before committing to the visible surfaces.

Repair and Refinish

Address loose joints and failed finish while keeping sound wood and honest signs of age intact.

Keep notes about materials, methods, surprises, mistakes, and results for this project and the next one.

The Story Is Underway

The table has not been stripped, sanded, stained, or refinished, but its first workbench chapter is now complete. I turned it over, removed every base screw safely, discovered the glued joint, studied the sliding leaf supports, and made a photographic map of the hinges.

The next step is likely to be a small act of reversal: return the base screws to their original holes and leave that sound glued assembly alone. Then I can separate the drop leaves carefully, clean and inspect each part, and continue answering the larger questions without creating damage simply for the sake of taking everything apart.
